5 Underrated Cary Grant Films
Cary Grant is the quintessential film actor. He has topped many Greatest Actor lists and is known for such films as North by Northwest, An Affair to Remember, and The Philadelphia Story. But with 73 movies in his filmography, there are sure to be ones that don’t get the recognition they deserve. Let’s take a look.
Holiday. Grant is engaged to Katharine Hepburn’s sister, but when he’s expected to partake in the family business, he exhibits reservations. Meanwhile, free spirited Kate falls for Grant, who really wants to travel the world in pursuit of his life’s passion.
Suspicion. Joan Fontaine is growing increasingly convinced that her new husband Cary Grant is trying to kill her. And, in fact, Director Alfred Hitchcock wanted Grant to be a murderer, but the studios demanded a happy ending. Still, the film fulfills on the promise of its title by offering a plethora of suspense before Grant is finally presumed innocent.
Houseboat. When Grant’s ex-wife dies, he takes full custody of their children. He hires Sophia Loren as nanny, and it’s obvious she’s the perfect match for him. But it takes Grant a while to see it due to his thick skull.
Dream Wife. Cary Grant is tired of waiting for girlfriend Irene Dunne to have time in her career at the Department of State in order to marry him. So, he proposes to the princess of Bukistan. Dunne is assigned to oversee the political ramifications of the coupling. But the princess reveals she does not want the marriage, which is good since it’s not really working out for Grant quite as he hoped.
Sylvia Scarlett. This movie is awkward and quirky, but by the end you’re hooked by the first flick to pair Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Grant entices Hepburn, who has disguised herself as a man, into petty crime schemes until she convinces him to go straight. They chase separate love interests, with Kate revealing her identity, yet wind up together in the end.
